Abstract

This study is a qualitative research.  The study is aimed to describe the profile of the junior high school students’ critical thinking in word problems solving in terms of cognitive styles and mathematics ability. The subject of the research is students of class VIII MTs. Assaadah II Bungah Gresik. It consists of 4 students, which comprise of student having high mathematics ability with reflective cognitive style, student having high mathematics ability with impulsive cognitive style, student having low mathematics ability with reflective cognitive style, student having low math ability with impulsive cognitive style.

The results shows  that (1) student having high mathematics ability with reflective cognitive style, when completing word problems, the subject determines the subject matter which refers to what is known and asked for the question by adopting matter. The information disclosed is complete. In the process of interviewing, when answering the questions, student answers slowly. (2) Student having high mathematics ability with impulsive cognitive style, when completing word problems, the subject determines the subject matter that refers to what is known and asked for the question and tends to adopt on the matter, but no information disclosed is incomplete. (3) Student having low mathematics ability with reflective cognitive style, when completing word problems, subject reads repeatedly to understand question. In determining the subject matter, the subject only reads matter without reducing word. (4) Student having low mathematics ability with impulsive cognitive style, when completing word problems, the subject reads repeatedly to find out what information is in question. The subject also determines the main issues on the matter, but only reads it
